Kaka reads Walking to School

Learning Observed:
Kaka has been learning about making sense of what he reads, when he reads out loud. He is also able to use the pictures in the story to help him read simple texts.
As a group, we have been learning to think about what makes sense and use word attack skills to help sound out tricky words. We have been looking at blends, word endings, and word clusters to help us.



Key Competencies/ Vision Principles:
Kaka shows capability by using what he has learned in word attack to sound out tricky words. He has been also thinking carefully about what makes sense and using the pictures to help him. Kaka is being collaborative by reading as a group and helping others. He is making connections from his learning to the texts he reads.



Next Learning Steps:
Continue reading at home and retelling the story again. Carry on with your bug club at home too.

Kaka and Weaving

Learning Observed:
As part of iExperience, Kaka showed interest in weaving. He listened carefully to instructions and sought to do this activity independently. Kaka was able to cut his first sheet of paper, having strips down the middle without cutting the paper right to the edges. Next, he was able to use another sheet of paper to cut into strips. Kaka thought carefully about the patterns and where each strip was meant to go. Once, he finished Kaka was also to help other learners around him.




Key Competencies/ Vision Principles:
During this activity, Kaka demonstrated that he was connected by actively taking part in learning conversations and activities. Kaka was curious of how this pattern was made and listened carefully to instructions. He showed capability by listening and completing his task independently. Kaka was also collaborative by helping other learners around him.

Take weaving to the next level by using harakeke or by researching and find out other designs in weaving

Kaka at Tennis

Learning Observed:
This session is the third of four week sessions of tennis for the learners habitat. Each session is 30 minutes with coach Marcel from AceSports on a Thursday. Tennis is a competitive sport in New Zealand that has two players. A player has to hit the tennis ball over the net back and forth to their competitor. The object of the sport is to win the set or until you reach a tie breaker.

This is Kaka's first session at tennis. He has been learning to hold and use a racket correctly to hit a tennis ball. He practiced balancing the tennis ball on his racket without dropping it. During this session, Kaka began hitting the tennis ball over the net to a partner.

Key Competencies/ Vision Principles:

During this learning, Kaka demonstrated that he was:
  • Connected - actively taking part in physical and education activities.
  • Capable - developing skills to play tennis
  • Collaborative - working with others to hit the tennis ball over the net
  • Thinking  - listening carefully to instructions and learning how to apply them

Next Learning Steps:
Continue learning motor skills of holding the racquet and hitting the ball accurately and with control.
